Material, whether you like it or not, is a force to be reckoned with. You seem to be a firm believer in it. In the months leading up to the official introduction of Android 12, Google redesigned most of its applications, but that’s not to say it hasn’t continued to update and alter some old designs. Last year, the Phone app received dynamic themes, but we’ve just seen hints that a more comprehensive revamp is on the way. A brand-new dialer UI may already be installed on your Pixel.
Google is pushing out its new appearance to select users on the current beta version of the Phone app, according to 9to5Google. Because this is a server-side change, not all beta users will be affected right away. If you’re fortunate, you’ll get an app that looks just like the one we previewed in February, replete with new animations and revamped buttons. It’s obviously adding on what was introduced last year, but it doesn’t mean it’s not a step in the right direction.
You’ll feel perfectly at home here if you’re familiar to Android 12’s PIN lock screen or the revamped calculator app. These buttons are made entirely of both of them, with the addition of oval-shaped borders to make them stand out even more. The number pad is now taller in general, taking up more screen space than the previous arrangement. It’s not a significant update, but it does bring the app closer to the rest of the OS.
Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to test out the new design right immediately; despite joining the beta programme, I was unable to get it to load on my Pixel 6. If you want to give it a go, join up for the beta on Google Play or download the current APK from APK Mirror.
